How to Sell Better Holiday Boxes?

Each year by September 1, the wind starts to feel colder and public spaces begin playing Christmas carols — you know that it’s the Holidays. During Holiday season, people are nicer and more thoughtful and the Christmas spirit is just all over the atmosphere. And for us businessmen and businesswomen, we know that it’s indeed the most cheerful time of year. But the question is, with the sea of new products both local and imported being presented as options to customers, how will yours stand out? How will you be able to rise from all the noise and enjoy the benefits of the Holiday rush? Here is your quick checklist for your brand to be a Christmas darling.

  1. A curated, giftable box. Being or having a subscription box is already a plus! This means you already have the skill or support to curate a special box. It’s now time to go through your products and think how you can mix and match them up so you can cater to different kinds of interests. With this, you already took the hassle of putting up a gift box together off of your customers. They already love you for that.
  2. Limited edition packaging. You have your usual packaging, yes. But step up by coming out with limited edition packaging: printed boxes, ribbons, onion skin, labels, cards – the works! According to studies, packaging color and labels impact consumer behavior during the buying process so make sure that you got this one covered. Besides, you want to make sure that whoever receives your box will feel special.
  3. Add Freebies or Exclusives. According to a 2013 survey of Nielsen, 76% of Filipino respondents say that products with free gifts are more attractive to buy, exceeding the Asia Pacific average of 58%. No doubt that if you throw in a sample or a bonus gift inside the box, you’re giving your customers that extra feeling of surprise, fun, and fulfillment. How will you get your hands on samples or exclusives? Filter through your personal network of entrepreneur friends and/or family and ask who is willing to give you samples or good scraps. You’ll be surprised what people can actually give you.
  4. Retain customers. Include coupons in your box. Ok, so you’ve curated a good mix of highly giftable products, packaged it well, and even included freebies. Now you’re all set to deliver the box and — ooops! Not yet. You want to keep your customer who bought coming back, and the gift receiver to try you it themselves soooo you give them coupons for their next purchase/s. It may sound funny but in 2012, Coupons.com commissioned a study led by Dr. Paul J. Zak, professor of Neuroeconomics at Claremont Graduate University, to learn how coupons impact people’s happiness, health and stress. Together, they discovered that coupon recipients who got a $10 voucher experienced a 38% rise in oxytocin levels and were 11% happier than those who did not receive a coupon. Furthermore, their respiration rates dropped 32%, heart rates decreased by 5% and sweat levels were reportedly 20 times lower than their peers. Consequently, they felt more relaxed and less stressed. Now you don’t just make customers happy, you keep them healthy too!
  5. Deliver on time. These are gifts, so time is king. Delays will be difficult to forgive, so make sure that you fulfill earlier so you can ship earlier or right on time.
